As Henry Ford was mass-producing automobiles and barns were being transformed into houses, America needed a new way to safely store and easily access their cars. Out of this need, a man took an idea and turned it into a legacy. In 1921, C.G. Johnson began a journey to bring the upward-acting, sectional garage door to America and forever change the way people enter their homes. 105 years later, the Overhead Door™ Brand is keeping the legacy alive with more than 450 distributors in North America who proudly represent the iconic Red Ribbon logo.

C.G. JOHNSON
Overhead Door Corporation founder, C.G. Johnson, invented the first upward-acting garage door.
1924
MASS PRODUCTION
The Harford City, Indiana plant was opened with 200,000 square feet of manufacturing space allowing mass production of garage doors.
1926
IT’S ELECTRIC
Overhead Door Corporation founder, C.G. JOHNSON, invented the first electric garage door opener.
1930
WE STAND FOR QUALITY
In 1930, the company announced a “job-for-everyone” plan during the Christmas holidays. Employees were proud to belong, and the quality of work showed it. This is the legacy thousands of professionals have built the Red Ribbon on.
1936
HOME INTEGRATION
The business remained strong during the years of the Depression. Architects began designing homes with garages attached. This made garages as convenient as possible, allowing homeowners to access their vehicles without having to step out into the elements.
1956
MOBILE EXPANSION
By 1956, the company expanded its expertise beyond upward-acting sectional garage doors, to include doors for trucks and trailers, formally creating TODCO.
1960's
A NEW STANDARD
The garage represented about 45% of a home’s square footage and having a garage with an electric opener was the norm.
Overhead Door Corporation began to buy out the franchised operations that had served the company so well in the early years. It also remodeled existing facilities and opened new door manufacturing plants.
The beginning of a New Legacy
Mid-Atlantic Door Group, Inc., originally founded in Beltsville, MD, has expanded to encompass eight locations, proudly serving Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia. Services include commercial and residential sales, professional installations, and 24-hour same-day repair services.

In 1973, Mid-Atlantic Door Group, Inc. began it’s journey with the creation of Washington Overhead Door, based in Beltsville, Maryland.
1975
NEW ERA LEADS TO INNOVATIVE MATERIALS
In 1975, Washington Overhead Door proudly became an official Overhead Door™ Distributor, going by trade name Overhead Door Company of North Washington™.
This milestone coincided with a significant shift in garage door materials, introducing steel, aluminum, fiberglass, and more. These advancements paved the way for the diverse options available to homeowners and businesses today, including composite materials with synthetic insulation for enhanced durability and efficiency. Additionally, aluminum and glass garage doors have gained popularity, especially among owners of modern and contemporary homes, offering a sleek and stylish aesthetic.

HARRISBURG-YORK PENNSYLVANIA
In 1983, Mid-Alantic Door Group, Inc. purchased Overhead Door Company of Harrisburg-York™.
1985
CENTRAL VIRGINIA
In 1985, Mid-Atlantic Door Group, Inc. opened Overhead Door Company of Central Virginia™.
1989
WASHINGTON DC
In 1990, Mid-Alantic Door Group, purchased Overhead Door Company of Metropolitan Washington, DC™, and formally changed the name to Overhead Door Company of Washington, DC ™.
1991
PRICING STANDARDS
In 1991, we developed OHDirect®, a pricing program used by Overhead Door® Distributors nationwide.
2004
NORTHERN VIRGINIA
In 2004, Overhead Door Company of Washington, DC™ moved its Northern Virginia branch to Manassas, VA, marking a new chapter in its growth and service expansion.
2012
REPAIR PLATFORM
In 2012, Mid-Atlantic Door Group Inc. launched GarageDoorRepair.com to connect customers with local Overhead Door™ technicians nationwide.
2013
SOUTHERN MARYLAND
In 2013, the Overhead Door Company of Washington, DC™ expanded its reach by opening a Southern Maryland branch in Prince Frederick, MD, to provide enhanced service to customers in that market.
2018
FREDERICK MARYLAND
In 2018, Mid-Atlantic Door Group, Inc. proudly launched Overhead Door Company of Frederick™ in Frederick, Maryland, marking the beginning of our commitment to exceptional service and quality.

FREDERICKSBURG VIRGINIA
After successfully launching our location in Frederick, MD, we proudly celebrated the grand opening of Overhead Door Company of Fredericksburg in Fredericksburg, VA.

HAGERSTOWN MARYLAND
In 2026, Overhead Door Company of Washington, DC™ expanded into Hagerstown, Maryland, further strengthening our commitment to delivering exceptional commercial and residential garage door service throughout the region.
