Garage Door Maintenance Tips for Winter

Once the winter weather sets in, homeowners understand the impact that the cold can have on their home. Heating your home causes wood to expand and contract. Outside, snow accumulation can weaken the integrity of your roof. The same is true for your garage door. As it moves, the cold weather and excess moisture can cause problems. That’s why preventative maintenance is essential — to avoid costly repairs once it all melts away.

Lubricant for All Moving Parts

Lubricating all moving parts of your garage door ensures that they’ll remain operational in the cold. Several components work together to make your garage door move from the closed to open position.

  • The tracks are made of steel, which is subject to thermal cracking. Lubrication helps provide insulation.
  • The torsion springs, also made of steel, require lubrication to avoid rust and facilitate movement.
  • The rollers, which contact the tracks, require lubrication to facilitate smooth motion.
  • The hinges require lubrication at their pivot points for full operation.

Clean and Inspect Weather Stripping

Weather stripping helps seal and prevent cold air and moisture from entering your garage. Inspect your weather stripping for cracks and deterioration. Clean off any dirt and debris that would impede the stripping from being able to block out air and moisture completely. If it looks excessively worn with tearing, it’s better to replace the weather stripping completely.

Clear The Snow

Snow is heavy. After snowfall and other wintry mixes, be sure to keep your entryways clear and clean. The weight of the snow can cause damage to your garage door if you allow it to settle for too long. The heaviness can cause cracks and deterioration. Furthermore, moisture can lead to rust and rotting.

Schedule a Professional Inspection

If you don’t know what to look out for and need professional advice, schedule an inspection with a garage door installation and maintenance company. They’ll be able to outline the services you need to prepare for winter. It can also be the start of a long-term relationship, having a professional partner on hand whenever you need maintenance or repairs.
