Overhead Garage Storage Ideas

garage storage ideasIt doesn’t seem like it was that long ago that there was plenty of storage room in the garage. It’s filled to capacity now, so what’s a homeowner to do? The trick is to look up. That ceiling has real potential, and there are several systems that turn that unused area into practical space.

What Goes Up

Even the tightest garage doors can’t keep out moisture, so overhead storage is ideal for keeping things away from the damp. Cardboard boxes aren’t as likely to develop mold or mildew when they’re up high enough to catch plenty of fresh air, and everyday dirt and debris stay down below. Different systems handle different storage needs, but they all work well for:

  • Seasonal items
  • Chemicals and caustic cleaners
  • Expensive tools
  • Camping and fishing gear

Stationary Storage

Ceiling racks are a simple, inexpensive strategy for overhead storage, and they’re easy to install. The most popular models are open on all sides and resemble a table turned upside down. This configuration makes it simple to access the rack from any angle. Other units feature lattice enclosures on three sides to keep stored items from falling out. A wide range of widths and depths makes these racks versatile in any garage space, and they come in a variety of colors.

Sliding Boxes

Sliding box systems offer a smart solution for things that are stored for most of the year. Their installation involves parallel tracking racks that support plastic bins designed to slide into the unit like a drawer. These models can hold multiple bins, and their complete enclosure provides ideal protection from dust and moisture. This system is handy for storing seasonal clothing and bedding because the bins can be packed inside the house and then moved to their racks in the garage.

Pulley Systems

A favorite with homeowners, pulley racking features all the advantages of more traditional storage while it eliminates the need to climb a ladder. These installations are highly customizable, but they operate on the same principle. The shelving is lowered and raised by a fixed pulley system, so it’s simple to load. The height can be adjusted for easy access, and modifications allow for suspending everything from bicycles to luggage underneath the units.

Home improvement centers are a great resource for overhead storage, and online shopping also offers a wide range of systems. Many models work in other areas throughout the home too. The laundry room, pantry and even the tool shed in the backyard are ideal locations for overhead storage. Installing any of the systems is a simple handyman project, and the results are dependable permanent storage that frees up valuable space around the house.
