Garage Door Maintenance: Top Tips to Maintain Your Garage Door

Did you know that numerous media sources state that the average residential garage door opens and closes approximately 3-5 times per day, amounting to 1500 times a year? With over 70 million residential garage doors in single-family households within the United States alone, garage doors put in a lot of work. So it’s no wonder that whenever a garage door goes out of order or is on the fritz, it’s a headache for everyone. That’s why it’s essential to maintain your garage door so that it’s in good working order so that you can get where you need to go without a hitch.

Tip #1: Keep Your Garage Doors Moving Parts Lubricated

If you’re looking to increase the lifespan of your garage door, you should get into the habit of lubricating the moving parts regularly. You’ll want to lubricate your garage door’s moving parts every 6 months so that the joints and range of motion continue to effortlessly move without becoming rusted or tight. Lubricating your garage door’s moving parts is easy, too. All you need to do is wet a damp cloth, run it along the moving parts, and get to lubricating (without lubricating the tracks – this can cause damage!).

Tip #2: Check the Tracks and Keep Them Clean

The tracks play a critical role in the lifespan of your garage door, and they receive a lot of wear and tear. The tracks run along both sides of the garage door and run above it, guiding the garage door upon opening and closing. Since you want to avoid lubricating the tracks as this can cause damage, you’ll still want to keep the tracks clean. These can be cleaned with a warm, damp cloth to remove dirt and debris.

Tip #3: Tighten Any Loose Hardware

Your garage door works hard. However, your hardware can become loose over time as it works to keep operating, opening and closing repeatedly. You’ll want to check to ensure that any hardware hasn’t become loosened over time, which can cause your garage door to malfunction or not work as well as it should.
